The Music in Old Cape Cod

For me, in some music there’s a story…

By Lars Schall

For me, in some music there’s a story.

I lived with my grandfather for the summers as a child near the beach in Old Cape Cod. He would pull out an old record player and listen to Ravel and the like for hours and hours. Though I did not knew its name back then, Debussy’s First Movement of La Mer was always my favorite piece, and I remember people stopping and listening with us on the beach.

When I was seven my grandfather died, and for the last 30 summers I have gone to the same spot where he played those old melodies for hours on the record player. Today’s records don’t have the same scratchiness anymore that makes a record great, but still there’s a story in some music whenever I stand here, listening to the waves in Old Cape Cod.
